Sophia was written in plain C and it was created after studying already existing key-value databases.
Sophia developers analyzed, learned and tried to avoid all the problems with existing technologies and have created a new way of querying for data inside key-value store data files.
Using a combination of in-memory and on-disk data organization and storage system, Sophia managed to get faster query times which indirectly left room for more queries per second, allowing it to deal with more traffic than similar solutions.
Couple this new found speed with its C codebase that allows it to be ported practically to any operating system around and you have a high-end embeddable database system capable of standing its own ground and even out-performing more known solutions like Google's LevelDB.
